About Robert L. Ervin

Nature speaks directly to my heart.

I began sculpting in wood and stone over 40 years ago when I discovered combining my love for the California coast with the creativity of my hands and heart. Hiking and exploring beaches led me to treasure naturally found materials. Thus my hunting and gathering began and expanded. Inspired by the natural beauty of gathered driftwood I began my journey as an artist.

Working with rare woods washed down from the mountains holds a mystical allure for me. As I examine the wood grain, I simply begin working with mallet and chisel, in the moment, with intuition and reverence. Different types of wood and stone have certain characteristics to be considered and honored in the sculpting removal process.

I love the essence. I create abstract forms as I work in partnership with my material. Discovery in wood is my adventure. Flowing, sleek and abstract lines are my passion and joy.

Over time I began working in bronze using various patinas, creating new forms as well as duplicating some of the cherished pieces that I had first sculpted in wood. Bronze, I have found, lends a high degree of sophistication, which compliments the simple, clean lines that are indicative of my work.

Enjoy viewing my creations. If my art touches you, perhaps you’ll choose to arrange a more personal presentation.
